I have long been fascinated with Goethe's novel "Elective Affinities": Four people become entangled in each other's lives and seek a resolution for their changing feelings. I use this energy and spin the story around this classical conflict of two very different couples.
The story spans 26 years and ends in 1918, the end of the Belle Epoque and the beginning of the age of industrialization.
While writing I became increasingly aware that together with my characters I was living the beginning of a time that extends to the here and now. My current awareness of life informed the story, past and present fused. The characters are driven by their longing for self-determination and their creative zest for innovation. With them we live through the downfall of the monarchy and the first tentative steps into the wold of today.
While the story was conceived as a tv novel I have begun - parallel to the script - to develop a novel based on the story. It is important for me that both, film and novel, stand and convince on their own.
As the author it is especially rewarding for me to infuse this story with the sound of the novel - via the sensitive staging by the director, the wonderful play of the actors, the grand imagery and the powerful music. Thus the characters, their actions, feelings and innermost thoughts are narrated on different levels and it is for the viewer to choose whatever touches and enriches him the most - ideally all levels as one!
